James Farmer was a resounding crowd pleaser at the January 8 Monthly Membership Meeting.  The room was filled with the sound of laughter as Mr. Farmer shared stories of growing up in a small Georgia town. Then Farmer delighted the group with tips based on his design philosophy. Here are some of his pointers from when he “helps” people decorate:

  • Outdoors, the color green is nature’s neutral.  Be sure to add pops of color to your vistas along with tactile touches for enjoying your gardens up close.
  • Use foliage from your yard with store-bought flowers. It gives a more interesting high-low look.
  • Grocery store decor, such as fresh fruit, showcased in beautiful containers, is another high-low mix Farmer uses often.
  • Every room should have a shock or surprise. There should also be a touch of whimsy somewhere.
  • Layer. Farmer loves using framed photos, china, silver etc. Rugs can be layered  also.
  • The best lamps are made from objects that had a life as something else first. Vases and sculptures make super lamps.
  • Artwork is very important in adding personality to a room.
  • Setting a table is a lovely way to combine the joy of flowers, design and food and also get your decorating “fix”.
  • Use un-colors on your walls. Let your art and accessories provide the color in a room.
  • Grasscloth is a favorite wall treatment for Farmer.
  • Remember that our homes are more than a place to live. What does your home say about you?
